I was in the third grade, I had a (white) teacher. There were mostly
white kids in the class. One day, this teacher wrapped up a bar of soap
and gave it to me with a little bow on it as a present. I took it home
and opened it. I showed it to my mother, and she freaked out. She came
to school and ended up getting this teacher fired. Well, I had a rash
at the time, and this teacher was telling me I was dirty. My mom tried
to explain to me about racism, but I didn't understand until years later.
